The majority of the book takes place between Shadow, with Merlin on a journey volleying between the two godlike sides of this universe. And that change from previous books of constant information trading to a straight forward experience-as-you-go story was the change needed from the last one.

It’s also really cool to see these entities that have been integral to the series from the beginning (for the Pattern anyway) become important in a whole new way. There wasn’t any crazy finish to tee up the finale like the Corwin Cycle had, but there’s a lot in place for a couple different showdowns.

I’m mostly just ready to stop carrying this big ass book around.
